Food Starter Newsletter – Back to School Edition

September 20, 2018

Back to School Edition

September is just around the corner, and kids aren’t the only ones returning to studies. Fall is the perfect time for food entrepreneurs to hit the books. Ready to advance? We have courses for in-class learning, distance education, and even some new information about cannabis.

Market Feasibility Boot Camp

The 8th cohort of our Market Feasibility Boot Camp (MFBC) starts September 12, but it’s not too late to enroll. This 12-week course guides early-stage and pre-revenue food entrepreneurs through the steps necessary to make that crucial go/no go decision. But don’t believe us. In Is Market Feasibility Boot Camp Right for You?, three MFBC graduates share their experiences. Their answers are as diverse as their business concepts. Think MFBC is for you? Apply now as enrollment is limited.

MFBC LITE

Great food ideas aren’t limited to the GTA. But not everyone can commute to Food Starter. To serve food entrepreneurs regardless of where they live in Ontario, we developed MFBC LITE in collaboration with George Brown College. This streamlined 5-week course offers what you need to make the go/no-go decision via live-streamed classes. It also comes at a lighter price. For more information about what the course does and doesn’t provide, click here. The deadline to apply is September 7th with classes starting September 12. Space is limited, so act quickly. To apply, visit Eventbrite.

Popup Roundtable – Cannabis Edition

Don’t have a lot of time for professional development? Our roundtables are timely, targeted, and only two hours. With legalization of marijuana coming in October, Food Starter’s August 22nd session examined What Food & Beverage Entrepreneurs Should Know About Cannabis. Industry experts — Lisa Campbell, a Cannabis Portfolio Specialist at Lifford Wine & Spirits, and Chad Finkelstein, a Partner and Registered Trademark Agent in Dale & Lessmann’s Corporate Commercial Group – covered aspects from flavour profiles to legal issues to a sold-out crowd.

The round table was very informative and timely for me as I made a presentation to a perspective client the following day. They were impressed with the current knowledge I had with respect to edible cannabis. Thank you Food Starter ~ Chad and Lisa. – Anthony Davis

Not only are our popup roundtable presentations topical, they provide a chance to interact with food business experts and fellow food entrepreneurs. Future topics include Google & Food Business, and Strategies for Food & Beverage Entrepreneurs. Stay tuned to our newsletter for future dates and topics.

Women in Food Rise Up Fund by Fiera Foods

“Women can lead and excel in our industry,” says Boris Serebryany, President and CEO of Fiera Foods Company. Yet they aren’t always given the chance. Even though women represent almost half of Canadian business owners and contribute $148 billion towards the economy, they remain underrepresented in food manufacturing. In addition, women face barriers when applying for start-up and growth capital. And if the women are newcomers? They face even more hurdles.

To help create a more equitable playing field for women, Food Starter and Fiera Foods, are teaming up to launch The Women in Food Rise Up Fund.  For the next three years, this unique fund will award successful applicants a $5000 infusion in the form of a $3500 cheque and $1500 in Food Starter production hours or accelerator fee credits. Five finalists were interviewed on August 28th. Successful recipients will be announced on September 7th. You’ve missed the due date (August 13th) this year? No worries, we’ll open applications next year. Stay tuned for our announcement.

“Women, and especially newcomer women entrepreneurs, so need this kind of support to grow their businesses, and in so doing support not only themselves, their families, and create opportunities for others in terms of job creation or purchasing from others,” says Petra Kassun-Mutch, Executive Director, Food Starter.
