Food Venture Program Providing training, mentoring and a grant of up to $5,000 to successful participants.

Food Starter is now offering eligible early stage food companies an opportunity to apply for the Food Venture Program.

How the Program Works

The Food Venture Program will be offered on a cohort basis and funding will be provided to successful applicants to cover the costs of using Food Starter’s programming and facility.

The program follows these steps:

Step 1: Application Submission

  • Applicants complete an online application to access the Market Feasibility Boot Camp. The Market Feasibility Boot Camp is a 12-week training program focused on helping entrepreneurs to develop a business plan and determine the feasibility of their food business idea.

Step 2: Application Review

  • Applications will be reviewed and potential Food Venture candidates will be selected for interviews.

Step 3: Market Feasibility Boot Camp Approval

  • Clients will enter the Market Feasibility Program and pay a $1,000 fee towards the program. The program provides the tools, mentoring and feedback needed to develop the strategic components new food businesses need to succeed and includes training, production facility access and consultation.
  • Upon completion of the Market Feasibility Boot Camp, they will be eligible to apply to the Food Venture Program. Their application, and business plan will be reviewed, and they will then become eligible to receive a $5,000 grant towards the Food Commercialization Program.

Step 4: Food Commercialization Program Approval

  • Clients accepted into the Food Venture Program will be able to access the Food Starter Food Commercialization Launch Stage and part of the Development Stage.

Participants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for funding:

  • Applicants must operate a food processing company
  • There are no age restrictions on the program; however, the program participants must have a Toronto address
  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Applicants must not be enrolled in a full-time education program

  • Applicants must be able to contribute at least 25% of the grant amount up front

Use of the Funding:

All funds awarded are to be used to cover the costs and services provided by Food Starter for the client to participate in the Food Commercialization Program.

The Food Commercialization Program assists entrepreneurs to commercialize their food ideas fully. This program includes training, mentorship, use of shared food production facilities, shared marketing activities and more!

Each Food Venture grant recipient must contribute 25% (up to $1,000) of the awarded funds toward entering the program. Participation in the Market Feasibility Boot Camp will qualify as this contribution.
