Overview:

Operated by a not-for-profit board, Food Starter focuses on helping early-stage and small and medium-sized food processors commercialize and scale the development of their food products.  With an emphasis on baked goods, hot and cold fill products, and innovative foods for both traditional and ethnic markets, Food Starter provides access to a safe food production facility that offers access to small scale shared food production and packaging equipment, business advisory services and structured training to help companies scale and grow their food processing businesses.

Function:

The Food Starter Production Supervisor is a unique hands-on, plant floor position. This role will be ideal for a person who possesses a strong food production experience, a well-developed understanding of food safety and technical aptitude. This position requires an ability to solve problems and shift thinking quickly. Customer service skills are a must.

The successful candidate will be responsible for fulfilling these three key objectives:

  1. Act as the main point person/mechanical/technical expert on the facility’s production equipment, including maintenance, troubleshooting and cleaning;
  2. Manage and supervise the teaching of clients to understand and optimize their food production operations by maximizing effective line operations, operation of production equipment and implementing training opportunities to dovetail with the incubator programming and curriculum;
  3. Implement and enforce all company manufacturing policies, food safety programs, health and safety standards, sanitation and PM programs.

Reports to:     Facilities Manager

Major Functions/Accountabilities:

  1. Performs all the production readiness duties including but not limited to teaching and ensuring proper production equipment is used by Food Starter clients.
  2. Coordinates equipment installations, mechanical maintenance/repairs and cleaning and sanitation.
  3. Implements and enforces all operations including but not limited to:
  4. Coordinates and oversees food production areas to ensure effective workflow, training, scheduling and optimization of equipment usage in key production areas:
  5. Implements and ensures compliance of all mandated health and safety regulations and food safety quality control including but not limited to:
    • Allergen and gluten control systems
    • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)
    • Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
    • Joint Health and Safety (JHSC)
    • Food Handling; GMP, SOP, Gluten free
    • FSEP Pre-Requisite Programs
    • Foreign Material Program
  6. Support the Facility Manager as the lead contact on all government regulated inspections and prepares reports and records as needed to comply with audits.
  7. Oversees round-the-clock food processing schedules for Food Starter clients.
  8. Co-ordinates work-flow plans, food processing targets and client reporting procedures.
  9. Assesses and develops equipment training needs and programming opportunities, in consultation with other Food Starter staff.
  10. Coordinates client relationship management system to engage clients, track progress and report on effectiveness of programming.
  11. Tracks and prepares incubator performance measures as required.
  12. Acts as a main contact for the security monitoring company.
  13. Leads the food safety programs training and enforcement for compliance within the facility
  14. Coordinates and schedules all regulatory inspections of facility and building equipment.
  15. Manages inventory levels including but not limited to cleaning chemicals, consumables, spare parts, etc
  16. Schedules and coordinates all equipment service and preventative maintenance with qualified and approved service companies

Key Qualifications:

  1. 3 to 5 years relevant experience in the food processing industry combined with relevant advisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience in food operations on as a production supervisor or as a quality assurance team member in a medium to small-sized food manufacturing company
  3. Thorough knowledge of food production, equipment suppliers, food packaging systems, equipment use and technologies.
  4. Ability to assess mechanical equipment malfunctions and provide guidance on maintenance.
  5. Excellent oral communication skills and a willingness to work with and train clients to use Food Starter equipment and facilities effectively to optimize their food products. Ability to communicate effectively and respond to business enquiries regarding food production needs.
  6. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and report-writing skills.
  7. Well-developed computer knowledge including but not limited to Microsoft office, CRM systems. Comfort with technology and a willingness to adopt new systems on an ongoing basis.
  8. Strong analytical and problem-solving/troubleshooting skills when faced with mechanical problems and queries
  9. Knowledge of and demonstrated ability incorporate core competencies including customer service, communication, team work, initiative/self-management, accountability and flexibility/adaptability.
  10. Sound knowledge and understanding of legislation, licensing, permitting and regulations relevant food processing and packaging.

Compensation:

  • Pay range: $45,000 to $55,000 commensurate with experience
  • 2 weeks vacation per year
  • Full benefits package provided after 3-month probation period
